Following raging insecurity in Edo State Central District; home of the Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, the State Government has announced indefinite postponement of the 2025/2026 resumption dates of schools in the area.
The postponement affects the entire five councils of Esan-South-East, Esan-North-East, Esan-Central, Igueben, and Esan-West which make up the district and have experienced violent crimes, including kidnappings.
The postponement will allow the Government to address emergencies and improve the welfare of school children, the commissioner for education, Emmanuel Paddy Iyamu said.
A new resumption date will be communicated later, he added without being specific.
In a statement by the commissioner circulated amongst journalists in Benin, parents, guardians, school heads, proprietors, and all stakeholders within Edo Central senatorial district have been requested to take note of the development and comply accordingly.
“This is to inform the general public, particularly parents, school heads, and Proprietors that the resumption of public and private schools for the second term of the 2025/2026 academic session has been postponed until further notice.
“This is to enable us address some exigencies to improve the welfare of our Children. The new date of resumption will be duly communicated to the public in due course.
“Parents, guardians, and all Stakeholders within Edo Central Senatorial District are kindly requested to take note of this development and comply accordingly”, Iyamu said.
Insecurity has been one of the most challenging headaches of the governor Monday Okpebholo-led administration of the All Progessives Congress (APC) since coming on board.
In response, the administration galvanising all the security agencies in the State, have consulted all the known books for solution; giving backup with the necessary logistics support, but seemingly the expected result(s) is proving difficult to get like trying to crack a rock for gold.
