To ensure peace and safety throughout this year’s Eid-el-Fitr festivity, the Police, Edo State Command has announced the deployment of 5,000 personnel, which includes a bomb squad across the State.

It is also to bolster visibility, secure public spaces and ensure swift response to any emerging threats, it was said.

The mouthpiece of the command, Eno Ikoedem made the disclosure in a statement circulated amongst journalists in Benin, late Wednesday.

The deployment covers Eid prayer grounds, major roads, motor parks and other high-traffic locations expected to witness large gatherings, she said.

The statement reads: “A total of 5,000 police personnel have been deployed to enhance police visibility, dominate public spaces and respond promptly to any emerging situation.

“The deployment cuts across Eid prayer grounds, major roads, motor parks, and other locations expected to witness large gatherings.

“In addition, the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) personnel have been strategically positioned and are already carrying out sweeps of designated prayer grounds and high-traffic areas to detect and neutralise any potential threats.

“These preventive checks will continue throughout the celebration period.”

Further, Ikoedem said the Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika has directed sustained patrols and intelligence-led operations, with particular focus on entry and exit points into the State.

Meanwhile, residents have been urged to go about their lawful activities without fear, remain vigilant and report any suspicious movement(s) or objects to the police.

The Command assured that adequate security presence will be maintained before, during and after the festivities, reiterating its commitment to safeguarding lives and property.

The Police also extend Eid-el-Fitr greetings to Muslim faithful, wishing them a peaceful and joyous celebration, Ikoedem said.
