Edo Wins Award of Excellence as Best Performing State in SGBV Prevention and Protection

Edo State has been conferred the Award of Excellence for Best Performing State in Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) Prevention and Protection.

The award was conferred on the State at the 26th National Council on Women Affairs, Child Advancement and Social Development, which began on Monday, 10 to Thursday, 13 August, 2026 in Jalingo, Taraba State.

Daisy Osunde, director of media in the State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, made the disclosure in a press release circulated amongst journalists in Benin, on Thursday.

The award presented by the National Council, recognises the State’s sustained efforts in preventing and responding to Sexual and Gender-Based Violence, protecting women and girls, and strengthening systems for the promotion of their rights and well-being, it was said.

In reaction, the State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Hon. Mrs. Eugenia Abdallah, described the award as a significant milestone for Edo State.

Also, as a validation of the commitment of the administration of His Excellency, Senator Monday Okpebholo, to creating a safer and more equitable society for women, girls and vulnerable persons, she was quoted to have asserts.

Abdallah was further quoted to have said the award was not only an honour, but also a call for the Ministry and its partners to do more in tackling SGBV and ensuring that survivors receive the necessary protection, support and justice.

As she commended the Permanent Secretary, directors and staff of the Ministry, including development partners, security agencies, civil society organisations; and other stakeholders for their contributions to the State’s progress in SGBV prevention and protection.

The Commissioner reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to strengthening advocacy, prevention, survivor-centred support and inter-agency collaboration to eliminate all forms of violence against women and girls in Edo State, the press release stated.

Continuing, Hon. Mrs. Abdallah was said to have dedicated the award to all stakeholders working tirelessly to protect the rights and dignity of women and girls across the State.

While she noted; that the recognition would further inspire the Ministry to raise the bar in its service to the people.

“This award belongs to Edo State and to every stakeholder who has contributed to our collective efforts to prevent Sexual and Gender-Based Violence; and protect survivors.

“We are encouraged by this recognition, but we also recognise that there is still much work to be done.

“We will continue to strengthen our systems, deepen collaboration and ensure that every woman and girl in Edo State can live free from violence and fear.“
